Who Can Sell on Each Platform?
On Whatnot you create an account, tap + Sell in the app and answer a short series of questions. Whatnot says many sellers unlock seller access within minutes and emails next steps if an application needs additional review. You complete seller verification before going live. Our Whatnot guide covers the process.
eBay Live is available to eligible business sellers and sole proprietors who meet eBay's seller, risk, policy and category requirements. Eligible existing sellers with business policies set up can automatically receive access through the Live Studio link in Seller Hub. eBay lists eight categories, Collectibles among them. Our eBay Live selling guide has the setup steps.
Whatnot Fees vs eBay Live Fees
Whatnot calculates commission on the sale price of the item; shipping and taxes paid by the buyer are not included. Your total sales across all categories in a four-week period set your tier for the next period. US Sports and TCG rates run from 8.00% at the Standard tier ($0 to $14,999) to 6.50% at Tier 6 ($500,000 or more). Payment processing is 2.9% plus $0.30 per transaction on the total order value, including buyer-paid shipping and taxes. The full tier table is in our Whatnot seller fees post.
eBay Live deducts a commission fee and a payment processing fee from each order. Commission is 6% of the total amount of the sale for all categories other than Coins, Bullion and Sneakers (which pay 4%), capped at $100 per item. The total amount of the sale includes the item price, handling charges, shipping costs collected from the buyer, sales tax and any other applicable fees. Payment processing is 2.9% of the total amount of the sale plus $0.30 per order, with a promotion through December 31, 2026 of a $0.10 per order fee on items priced $10 or less.
The same order on both platforms
eBay's pricing page works through a $100 item with $10 shipping and $8 tax, a $118 sale: commission $7.08, payment processing $3.72, total fees $10.80. By our arithmetic, a Standard tier Sports or TCG seller on Whatnot pays $8.00 commission on the $100 item plus $3.72 processing on the $118 total, which is $11.72. Whatnot's fees page makes the opposite case against an unnamed marketplace charging 6% on the full transaction, using a $10 item, $4.99 shipping and $0.85 tax: 8% of the $10 item price is $0.80, while 6% of the full $15.84 transaction is $0.95. Which costs less depends on your item prices and your Whatnot tier.
Card Break Rules Compared
Whatnot's Card Breaks Policy defines a card break as a sale format where the contents of sealed products are split among multiple buyers. Its rules for sellers:
- The full display of the break stays onscreen from the sale of an item to the end of the break, including sealed and opened product, tools and hands. The same rule applies to personals and rip-and-ship.
- The rules of the break must be in Show Notes or the item listings, including how base or bulk cards are handled.
- No prize in a break, cards only, and no randomization through a physical machine or a randomizer wheel.
- Every buyer receives at least one card per purchase, all product is opened in the same live show, spots cannot be sold off the platform or as pre-sales, and household members, family and employees may not enter.
Whatnot's Breaks feature batch-generates spots, randomizes assignments and exports them to packing slips, but its tools can currently only be used from a computer, so phone streamers need a computer on the side.
On eBay, case breaks, box breaks and pack breaks are allowed only when conducted by pre-approved sellers, and buyers must receive the full pack, box or slot purchased. The same rule covers trading card repacks. eBay says you may apply at ebaycasebreaks.com and that it reviews a seller's history of breaks for positive feedback, entertainment value and trust. During pack rips, case breaks and any opening, all products must stay within the camera frame and be clearly visible while being opened. eBay ends a stream after 60 minutes of inactivity, except for case break sellers.
Giveaways split the same way. Whatnot's Start selling guide says you can run auctions, sell fixed-price listings and offer Giveaways during your stream. eBay's Live policy does not allow chance-based items or sales during eBay Live events, including contests, lotteries, raffles and random drawings, and sellers may not conduct promotions, giveaways or competitions unless eBay explicitly approves them in advance.
Shipping and Payouts
Whatnot requires sellers to ship each order within 2 business days of the sale, excluding weekends and holidays, and an order counts as shipped once it receives a drop-off scan. For US sellers without Early Payout, earnings become available within four hours of confirmed delivery, and requested payouts typically arrive in one to two business days. Our Whatnot shipping guide covers rates and bundling.
On eBay Live, paid orders sit in Seller Hub under the "Paid - wait to ship" status for 8 hours after the event's scheduled start time so buyers can use combined shipping discounts, and your handling time starts after that window closes.
Streaming Setup and Gear
Whatnot says you can start a show from your phone and that you do not need to show your face. eBay Live needs a desktop or laptop to create and manage events, a stable internet connection, and a mobile camera or a camera set up with a third party broadcast tool such as Open Broadcaster Software (OBS). Both platforms want the product on camera while it is opened. Our Custom Sports Card Break Mats are 4 mm thick neoprene with an anti-slip backing, printed across the full surface with your logo, in 12" x 18", 12" x 22" and 16" x 32" sizes ($39.99 to $49.99 as of October 24, 2026). Pair one with a Custom Backdrop and see our custom card breaker supplies.
Which Is Better for Card Breakers?
Our read of the two platforms' own pages: Whatnot is the faster start if you want to apply in the app, go live from a phone and run breaks under a published policy without a separate approval round. eBay Live suits sellers who already run an eBay business and can get on its pre-approved breaker list. One rule to plan around: eBay Live events may not be simultaneously streamed on other live-commerce platforms, so you cannot run one show on both at once.
