How to Hang a Banner on a Table at a Card Show: Ties, Clamps and Hooks That Work
ChronicCardsLast updated: October 22, 2026
Key Takeaways
- The simplest way to hang a banner on a table is through its grommets: run zip ties, reusable hook and loop ties or string from the top grommets to the table legs or frame.
- Safco lists its 30" x 72" and 30" x 96" Event Series folding tables (6 and 8 foot) at 29 inches tall, so a 24 inch tall banner hung from the edge ends about 5 inches above the floor and a 36 inch tall banner is taller than the table.
- Spring clamps or large binder clips on the top hem work when you cannot reach the legs, including over a tablecloth.
- Command says its hooks need a smooth, clean surface wiped with rubbing alcohol and an hour before use, and that its strips are one-time use.
- Show rules apply. The Next Level Card Show vendor handbook says displays, banners and merchandise must stay within your assigned booth space and must not obstruct aisles or walkways.
Table of Contents
To hang a banner on a table, run it off the front edge: tie the top corner grommets to the table legs or frame with zip ties, reusable hook and loop ties or string, or clamp the top hem to the table edge with spring clamps or binder clips. Adhesive hooks on a smooth table edge are the third option. Details verified as of October 22, 2026.
Start With the Grommets and the Table
Our Custom Vinyl Banner is printed on Titan 10 oz scrim vinyl with heat-welded hems and grommets, and the listing says hanging strings are not included. So every method below starts with what you put through the grommets.
For the table, we use Safco's Event Series rectangular folding tables as the reference: the 30" x 72" and 30" x 96" models both list a maximum height of 29 inches and a maximum depth of 30 inches. Card show tables vary; our post on table banner sizes for card shows covers the sizes three organizers list.
Which Banner Size Fits a Folding Table?
Our arithmetic against a 29 inch tall table for the six sizes on our listing:
| Banner size | Width on the table | Height check on a 29 inch tall table |
|---|---|---|
| 48" x 24" horizontal | 24 inches short of a 6 foot table | Bottom edge about 5 inches above the floor |
| 72" x 24" horizontal | Full width of a 6 foot table; 24 inches short of an 8 foot table | Bottom edge about 5 inches above the floor |
| 72" x 36" horizontal | Full width of a 6 foot table | 7 inches taller than the table; it would fold onto the floor, so hang it on a wall instead |
| 24" x 48", 24" x 72", 36" x 72" vertical | Not made for a table front | All taller than the table; hang behind you instead |
The two 24 inch tall horizontals are the table-front sizes. The base price is $49.99 as of October 22, 2026, and the listing says larger sizes cost more. For a banner behind the table, our guide to hanging a backdrop without a stand covers wall hooks.
Tie the Banner Through the Grommets
This is the method we use. The steps are ours:
- Drape the banner over the front edge with its top hem on the tabletop.
- Thread a tie through each top corner grommet and around the nearest leg, or around the frame rail under the top if the legs sit too far in.
- Pull both corners until the top edge is taut and level, then fasten.
- If the middle sags, add a tie through a middle grommet to the frame.
What to tie with:
- Zip ties or string. Zip ties pull tight and get cut off at teardown, so bring spares. String or paracord knots slower but costs nothing.
- Reusable hook and loop ties. VELCRO Brand describes its ONE-WRAP Heavy Duty Ties as pre-cut, adjustable and reusable ties that wrap onto themselves with a back-to-back fastener, for indoor or outdoor use, and says its wire ties range from 8 to 23 inches. Its instructions: insert the smaller end into the slit on the other side, pull tight, then wrap the tie around and back onto itself. They are sold for cables; the same wrap holds a grommet to a table leg.
With a tablecloth, tie around the legs under the cloth so it hides the hardware, or lift the cloth, tie to the frame and drop it back over the ties.
Clamp the Top Hem to the Table Edge
When the legs are out of reach, clamp instead. Spring clamps or large binder clips grip the top hem and the table edge together, with the tablecloth sandwiched between if there is one. Our rules: put the jaws on the hem, not the print; use at least three clamps across a 72 inch banner; and pad the jaws, since this is usually a venue table, not yours. Clamps come off in seconds, so recheck them after the morning rush.
Adhesive Hooks on a Smooth Table Edge
Adhesive hooks on the front edge, with a grommet dropped over each hook, leave nothing wrapped around the legs. They come with the most conditions, all from Command's own pages:
- Command says its products work best on smooth, clean surfaces such as painted walls, finished wood, tile, glass, metal and other smooth surfaces listed on the package, and that its strips are not recommended for heavily textured surfaces. Check the package for your table's surface.
- Wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol, not household cleaners or water. Press the strip to the hook, then press the hook to the surface firmly for 30 seconds. A one-piece hook is ready to use after 1 hour.
- Indoor hooks have a temperature range of 50 to 105 degrees F. Command's FAQ says regular indoor strips are not made for outdoor conditions and that its outdoor strips are water- and UV-resistant, so an outdoor show calls for outdoor hooks.
- Strips are one-time use. To remove a hook, hold it in place and stretch the strip slowly straight down against the surface until it releases, never toward you.
- Stay under the weight limit on the package. Command's weight limits guide lists the Clear Small Hook at 1 pound, the Clear Medium Hook at 2 pounds, the Medium Hooks at 3 pounds, the Large Clear Hook at 4 pounds and the Large Hook at 5 pounds.
Our listing gives no banner weight, so weigh yours before choosing hooks and split the load across at least two. The table usually belongs to the venue or organizer, so ask before sticking anything to it.
Should You Use Hook and Loop on a Banner?
Adhesive hook and loop strips look like an obvious answer. VELCRO Brand's page for its Industrial Strength Strips says they are for smooth surfaces including painted wallboard, glass, metal and most plastics, hold 1 pound per square inch of tape, and are not recommended for fabrics, dashboards, flexible vinyl or underwater use. A vinyl banner that rolls up is flexible vinyl by our reading, so we keep adhesive fasteners off the print and use the adhesive-free ONE-WRAP ties above instead.
Card Show Rules for Banners
A banner on the front of your own table stays inside your footprint. The Next Level Card Show vendor handbook (Las Vegas) says booths must remain within the boundaries of the assigned space, and that displays, shelving, banners, showcases and merchandise must remain within your assigned booth space and must not interfere with neighboring booths or obstruct aisles, walkways or attendee traffic. It also says all tables include a black tablecloth. The N.E.W. Card Show vendor page (Northeast Wisconsin) says to keep displays within your space and out of the aisles. Check your show's vendor page before planning a wall banner behind you.
Our Custom Card Stand ($19.99 as of October 22, 2026) is a two-piece stand printed with your logo that slots together and comes apart for travel. Our Custom Sports Card Break Mats ($39.99 to $49.99 in three sizes, the largest 16" x 32") are 4 mm thick neoprene with an anti-slip backing, printed across the full surface. Both sit with the banner in our custom card breaker supplies collection; our list of the biggest sports card shows is where to use them.
