Key Takeaways

  • You can hang a fabric backdrop without a stand by putting adhesive hooks on a smooth painted wall and clipping the top hem to the hooks.
  • Command says its products work best on smooth, clean surfaces such as painted walls, finished wood, tile, glass and metal, and are not recommended for wallpaper, brick or rough concrete. Its strips are not recommended for heavily textured walls.
  • Command's hook instructions say to wipe the wall with rubbing alcohol, press the hook to the surface firmly for 30 seconds and wait 1 hour before use.
  • Command lists its Large Hook at 5 pounds, Jumbo Hook at 7.5 pounds and Medium Hooks at 3 pounds, so weigh your backdrop before you pick hooks.
  • Our Custom Backdrop is a 100% polyester microfiber wall tapestry with hems on all sides, in four sizes from 26 x 36 inches to 88 x 104 inches.

To hang a backdrop without a stand, put a row of adhesive hooks on a smooth painted wall, clip the top edge of the backdrop to the hooks and let it hang flat behind your break table. It leaves no holes, it comes down cleanly and it works in a rented room. Below we walk through the hook method step by step using Command's own instructions, cover a second method that uses things you already own, and show which walls to avoid.

  • Adhesive hooks rated above the weight of your backdrop. We use Command hooks in this guide because Command publishes weight limits for its products.
  • Clips to join the fabric to the hooks. Binder clips or curtain clip rings both work. Command's hook page says not to apply strips to paper or soft surfaces (its tip is written for frames), so we do not stick strips to the fabric itself.
  • Rubbing alcohol and a cloth. Command's first step is to wipe the wall with rubbing alcohol, not household cleaners or water.
  • A kitchen scale and a tape measure.

Method 1: How Do You Hang a Backdrop With Adhesive Hooks?

This is the method we recommend for a home studio. The application steps are Command's, from its page on indoor and outdoor hooks. The clip steps are ours.

  1. Measure and mark. Measure the top edge of the backdrop and mark a level line on the wall where the top hem will sit, inside the area your camera shows.
  2. Wipe the wall with rubbing alcohol. Command says not to use household cleaners or water.
  3. Apply the strip to the hook, then the hook to the wall. For all hooks other than its clear outdoor hooks, Command says to remove the blue or red liner, press the adhesive strip to the back of the hook, remove the black liner and press the hook to the surface firmly for 30 seconds.
  4. Wait 1 hour. For a one-piece hook, Command says to wait 1 hour and the hook is ready to use. For a two-piece hook, slide the hook up and off the back plate, press the base firmly for 30 seconds, slide the hook back on and wait 1 hour for the adhesive to build.
  5. Clip the top hem. Put a binder clip or curtain clip ring on the top hem above each hook, then hang the clips on the hooks. Space the hooks evenly.
  6. Check it on camera. Adjust the clips until the top edge sits straight in your stream preview.

Command's hook page also lists tips to follow before you apply anything: wait 7 days after painting before use, do not hang over beds or on wallpaper, do not hang valuable or irreplaceable items, and indoor hooks have a temperature range of 50°F to 105°F.

Method 2: How Do You Hang a Backdrop Without a Wall or Hooks?

If the wall is off limits, hang the backdrop from something that is already there. These are our suggestions, not manufacturer instructions:

  • A curtain rod. Curtain clip rings on the top hem slide onto an existing rod.
  • A bookshelf or cabinet. Large binder clips grip the top hem to the top edge of a shelf unit behind your table.
  • A door. Over-the-door hooks give you hanging points without touching the wall.

Check the frame before you go live. If you run card breaks, keep the backdrop out of the way of the product and your hands. Our step by step Whatnot guide covers those camera rules.

Which Walls Work for Adhesive Hooks and Which Do Not?

Command's FAQ answers this directly. Its products work best on smooth, clean surfaces such as painted walls, finished wood, tile, glass, metal and other smooth surfaces listed on the package. Painted walls are fine when the paint is fully cured for at least 7 days, clean, smooth and in good condition.

The walls to avoid, per the same FAQ:

  • Heavily textured walls. Command says its strips are not recommended for them because the adhesive may not make full contact.
  • Wallpaper, brick or rough concrete. Command says its products are not recommended for these surfaces.

Command also says regular hooks and strips may not perform as well in humid areas, so read the package before you count on them in a basement or garage.

How Heavy Is a Backdrop and How Many Hooks Do You Need?

Our listing does not state the weight of the Custom Backdrop, so put yours on a kitchen scale before you buy hooks. Then pick hooks rated above that number. Command's FAQ says to pick a hook that is rated for the weight of your item and not to hang items heavier than the listed weight limit. Here are the capacities Command lists for some of its hooks and strips, as of October 16, 2026:

Command product Product number Weight capacity (per Command)
Command Jumbo Hook 17004 7.5 pounds
Command Large Hook 17003 5 pounds
Command Large Clear Hook 17093CLR 4 pounds
Command Medium Hooks 17001 3 pounds
Command Designer Small Hooks 17082 1 pound
Command Clear Mini Hooks 17006CLR 1/2 pound
Command Poster Strips 17204 1 pound

Two things we do with those numbers. First, we spread the top edge across several hooks so the fabric hangs flat, and we still keep the whole backdrop under the rating of a single hook, because a slipped clip can leave one hook holding the load. Second, we do not add extra strips to a hook. Command's FAQ says to use only the number of strips shown in the instructions, and that adding extra strips does not always increase the weight limit.

For width, our four backdrop sizes run from 26 inches to 104 inches across, depending on the orientation you order. A hook every 12 to 18 inches along the top hem is our starting point, so a 50 inch wide backdrop gets four hooks and an 88 inch wide backdrop gets six or seven.

How Do You Take the Backdrop Down Without Damage?

Unclip the fabric first, then remove the hooks the way Command describes: hold the hook or back plate gently in place with one hand, never pull the strip toward you, and stretch the strip slowly straight down against the wall, at least 12 inches, until it releases. Command says its strips are one-time use, so keep replacement strips if you move your setup around. For a card show table, our Custom Vinyl Banner has grommets instead (hanging strings not included).

Hanging a Backdrop FAQs

What can I use if I don't have a backdrop stand?
Adhesive hooks on a smooth painted wall, with binder clips or curtain clip rings joining the top hem of the backdrop to the hooks. If the wall is off limits, clip the backdrop to a curtain rod, the top edge of a bookshelf or over-the-door hooks instead.
What can I hang a backdrop on?
Command says its products work best on smooth, clean surfaces such as painted walls, finished wood, tile, glass and metal, and are not recommended for wallpaper, brick or rough concrete, and its strips are not recommended for heavily textured walls. Away from the wall, a curtain rod, a shelf unit or a door with over-the-door hooks can hold the clips.
How can I securely mount a fabric backdrop to the wall?
Follow the hook maker's instructions. Command's steps are to wipe the wall with rubbing alcohol, press the hook to the surface firmly for 30 seconds and wait 1 hour before use, and its FAQ says not to hang items heavier than the listed weight limit. Clip the top hem to several evenly spaced hooks instead of sticking strips to the fabric.
How do you hang a tapestry without nails?
Our Custom Backdrop is a polyester wall tapestry with hems on all sides, and we hang it with adhesive hooks and clips on the top hem. Command lists its Large Hook at 5 pounds and its Jumbo Hook at 7.5 pounds, so weigh the tapestry first and stay under the rating of the hooks you choose.
Can you hang a backdrop with Command hooks or strips?
Hooks, yes, as long as the backdrop weighs less than the hook's listed rating and the wall is a smooth surface that Command lists. Command's hook page says not to apply strips to paper or soft surfaces (its tip is written for frames), so clip the fabric to the hooks rather than sticking strips to it.
