Key Takeaways

  • A display setup needs four things: a rigid holder for each card, a card stand, a card mat for handling, and lighting that does not fade the cards.
  • Our clear card stands come five to a pack and are sized for standard 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" cards up to 35pt thick.
  • Light damage is cumulative and irreversible, and UV does the most damage. Keep displayed cards out of direct sunlight. LEDs do not emit UV.
  • Our card mats are 4 mm thick neoprene with an anti-slip backing. Custom card break mats come in 12" x 18", 12" x 22" and 16" x 32".
  • Standard card storage boxes are not built for toploaders or slabs. BCW's Graded Shoe Box holds over 300 3" x 4" toploaders or about 100 graded cards.

The top sports card accessories for display and setup are card stands, one-touch holders, a card mat, LED lighting, one-touch stickers and storage boxes sized for toploaders and slabs. Breakers and streamers can add a backdrop.

Display and Setup at a Glance

This post covers the display and setup side of the hobby. For the basic protection kit, i.e. penny sleeves, toploaders, Card Savers, storage boxes and binders, read Must-Have Accessories for Sports Card Collectors.

1. Card Stands

A card stand is the simplest way to get a card off the shelf and facing you. Put the card in a penny sleeve and a rigid holder first, then stand it up.

  • Clear stands: our card stands are clear plastic, come five to a pack, stand 3 inches tall and are sized for standard 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" cards up to 35pt thick.
  • Custom stands: our custom card stand is a hardboard stand with a plastic leg and a one-sided glossy print. It is made for card shops and breakers who want their logo in the shot.
  • One-touch stands: Ultra PRO sells its 35pt ONE-TOUCH magnetic holders with a black base that holds the card at a slight angle. The holders use UV-blocking additives and non-PVC materials.

2. Card Mats

A card mat gives you a soft, non-slip surface for sorting cards, opening packs and running breaks, so cards never sit directly on a desk or table.

Our card mats are 4 mm thick neoprene with an anti-slip backing and a hemmed edge. You can add your own logo and color to a custom card break mat, which comes in three sizes: 12" x 18", 12" x 22" and 16" x 32". Or start with a plain black card mat in the same three sizes.

When the mat gets dirty, follow our step-by-step cleaning guide.

3. Lighting

Lighting makes a display, and it is also what damages one. The Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) says light damage to paper is cumulative and irreversible, that UV radiation is the most destructive part of light, and that intensity and long exposure times can fade dyes and colorants.

  • Keep cards out of direct sunlight. NEDCC says sunlight is too intense, causes extensive fading and has a high UV component.
  • Use LEDs. NEDCC says LEDs do not emit UV or IR radiation. It says fluorescent lamps emit significant UV.
  • Turn display lights off when you are not looking at the cards. Exposure adds up, even from LEDs.
  • Use a UV-rated holder for your best cards. Ultra PRO's UV ONE-TOUCH holders use UV-blocking additives.

4. One-Touch Stickers

One-touch stickers go on a one-touch holder or a toploader to add a color or a logo. They are a simple way to finish a card you ship, hand over at a show or keep in your personal collection.

5. Backdrops for Breakers and Streamers

If you break or sell on camera, a backdrop gives every stream the same background. Our custom backdrop is 100% polyester microfiber, printed edge to edge with your logo or design and hemmed on all sides. Sizes run from 26" x 36" to 88" x 104".

For the full camera, mat and lighting layout, read The Ultimate Guide to Setting Up Your Card Breaking Station.

6. Storage for a Growing Collection

Only a few cards fit on a shelf. The rest need a box that matches the holder they are in.

  • Loose and sleeved cards: a standard storage box. BCW's Monster Storage Box holds 3,200 standard cards, but BCW says it is not designed to fit toploaders, magnetic holders or slabs.
  • Toploaders and graded cards: a box built for them. BCW's Graded Shoe Box holds over 300 3" x 4" toploaders or about 100 graded cards in a slab.

Sports Card Display FAQ

What is the best way to display sports cards?
Put the card in a penny sleeve and a rigid holder such as a toploader or a one-touch, then set it on a card stand. Keep the display out of direct sunlight.
Does sunlight damage sports cards?
Yes. The Northeast Document Conservation Center says sunlight is too intense, causes extensive fading and has a high UV component, and that light damage to paper is cumulative and irreversible.
Are LED lights safe for a card display?
LEDs are the better choice. The Northeast Document Conservation Center says LEDs do not emit UV or IR radiation, while fluorescent lamps emit significant UV. Light exposure still adds up, so turn display lights off when you are not looking at the cards.
What size card mat should I get?
Our custom card break mats come in 12" x 18", 12" x 22" and 16" x 32". All three are 4 mm thick neoprene with an anti-slip backing, so pick the size that fits your desk or break table.
What are one-touch stickers?
They are stickers sized for one-touch holders and toploaders that add a color or a logo to the holder. Our premium stickers come 50 to a pack, and custom one-touch stickers with your own design come 80 to an order.
