The Ultimate Guide to Setting Up Your Card Breaking Station
Richard WeissLast updated: October 6, 2026
Key Takeaways
- A card breaking station is the on-camera table: a break mat, a backdrop, a card stand, sleeves and toploaders, plus a camera, a microphone and lights.
- Our Custom Sports Card Break Mats are 4 mm thick neoprene with an anti-slip backing, in three sizes: 12 x 18, 12 x 22 and 16 x 32 inches.
- Our Custom Backdrop is 100% polyester microfiber with an edge-to-edge print, in four sizes from 26 x 36 to 88 x 104 inches.
- The Starter Breaker Bundle covers the branded pieces in one order: a 16 x 32 inch mat, a 26 x 36 inch backdrop and 80 one-touch stickers.
- Whatnot's Card Breaks Policy (dated June 22, 2026) requires the full display of a break to stay onscreen, so frame your camera around the whole mat.
Table of Contents
A card breaking station needs a break mat on the table, a backdrop behind you, a stand for the best pulls, penny sleeves and toploaders within reach, and a camera, microphone and lights pointed at the mat. Set those up once, test the shot, and every break starts from the same clean frame.
This guide is written for card breakers. The same station works for anyone who sells on camera, such as comics, video games or other collectibles: a clean surface, a branded background and the product in frame.
What Is a Card Breaking Station?
Card breaking is opening sealed boxes or packs of trading cards on camera for buyers who have each paid for a share of the cards. Our post on what a card break is covers the formats. The station is the fixed spot where you do it: the table, what sits on it, what hangs behind it and the gear pointed at it.
A dedicated station does three jobs:
- Protects the cards. Cards go from the pack to a soft surface to a sleeve, without touching a bare table.
- Keeps the break in frame. Everything happens in one place the camera already covers.
- Shows your brand. Your logo is in the shot for the whole stream, on the mat and on the backdrop.

1. Break Mat
The mat is the center of the shot. It gives cards a clean, soft place to land and it stays put while you sort.
Our Custom Sports Card Break Mats are made of 4 mm thick neoprene with an anti-slip backing and a hemmed edge. You choose a color and add your logo. There are three sizes:
- Small: 12 inches tall x 18 inches wide
- Medium: 12 inches tall x 22 inches wide
- Large: 16 inches tall x 32 inches wide
Pick the size that fills the table area your camera shows. One design note from the product page: we recommend a white or black background. The mats are printed with sublimation, and dark patterns can show faded color around the seams.
If you do not need a logo, the Black Card Mat uses the same 4 mm neoprene and comes in the same three sizes. See every option in our card mats collection.
2. Backdrop and Banner
A backdrop hides whatever is behind your chair and keeps the frame consistent from one break to the next.
Our Custom Backdrop is 100% polyester microfiber, printed edge to edge with your logo or design, with hems on all sides. It comes in four sizes: 26 x 36, 50 x 60, 68 x 80 and 88 x 104 inches. Measure the wall area your camera sees before you order.
For a card show table or a shop wall, the Custom Vinyl Banner is 10 oz scrim vinyl with heat-welded hems and grommets. It is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. Hanging strings are not included.
3. Card Stands
A stand keeps the best pull of the break upright and in the shot while you keep opening. Our Custom Card Stand is a two-piece hardboard stand with a plastic leg, a one-sided print and a glossy finish, so the stand itself carries your logo.
4. Sleeves, Toploaders and Stickers
Keep protection supplies on the table, not in a drawer. A hit should go into a penny sleeve as soon as you have shown it.
- Penny sleeves. Our BCW Card Sleeves come 100 to a pack and are made of acid-free polypropylene.
- Toploaders. Our BCW 3 x 4 Topload Card Holders come 25 to a pack and fit standard cards up to 20 pt thick.
- Stickers. A sticker over the top of a toploader or one-touch holder marks the card as yours when it reaches the buyer. Our Custom One Touch Stickers come 80 to an order with your design. The Premium One-Touch and Toploader Stickers come 50 to a pack in multiple colors.

5. Camera, Audio and Lighting
We do not sell cameras or lights, so this part is setup advice only.
- Frame the whole mat. Point the camera so the full mat, the sealed product and your hands are in the shot.
- Light the table evenly. Check the stream preview for glare on sleeves and toploaders and move the light until names and serial numbers are readable.
- Use a microphone. Viewers should hear every card you call out.
- Test the connection. Run a private test stream before you sell a spot.
Framing is also a platform rule. Whatnot's Card Breaks Policy (dated June 22, 2026) says the full display of a break must be kept onscreen from the sale of an item to the end of the break. That includes sealed and unsealed product and your hands while you handle cards, and it can be done over multiple cameras. For platform choices and a run of show, see how to host a live card break.

How to Set Up Your Card Breaking Station
- Choose the spot. Pick a quiet area with a flat table and room for a light on each side.
- Lay out the mat. Wipe the table, then center the mat where the camera will point.
- Hang the backdrop. Put it behind your chair and check that it fills the frame.
- Place the card stand. Set it at the back edge of the mat, inside the shot.
- Stage the supplies. Put sleeves, toploaders and stickers within reach of your free hand.
- Set the camera, microphone and lights. Frame the full mat and fix any glare.
- Run a test. Record a short practice break and watch it back before you go live.
