Key Takeaways

  • A new collector needs six things: penny sleeves, toploaders, one-touch holders, semi-rigid holders (Card Savers), storage boxes and a binder with pocket pages.
  • Sleeve first. A card goes into a penny sleeve before it goes into a toploader, a one-touch or a semi-rigid holder.
  • A standard card is 2-1/2" x 3-1/2". BCW's standard 3" x 4" toploader fits cards up to 35pt thick.
  • For grading, PSA says to put each card in a clear penny sleeve, then a semi-rigid holder, and not to use toploaders.
  • BCW's Monster Storage Box holds 3,200 standard cards. It is not designed to fit toploaders, magnetic holders or slabs.

The must-have accessories for a new sports card collector are penny sleeves, toploaders, one-touch holders, semi-rigid holders (Card Savers), storage boxes and a binder with pocket pages. Start with sleeves and toploaders, then add the rest as your collection grows.

1. Penny Sleeves

Why you need them: a penny sleeve is a thin, soft sleeve that keeps dust, fingerprints and surface scratches off a card. It is the first layer of protection, and it goes on before any rigid holder.

The BCW card sleeves we carry come 100 to a pack, measure 2-5/8" x 3-5/8" on the outside, and are made from acid-free polypropylene. BCW says they are designed to fit inside standard 3" x 4" toploaders.

Also on Amazon: Ultra PRO Premium Card Sleeves. Ultra PRO describes its PENNY SLEEVES line as non-PVC, acid-free polypropylene sized for standard 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" cards up to 35pt thick.

2. Toploaders

Why you need them: a toploader is a rigid plastic holder that keeps a sleeved card from bending or creasing. It is the standard holder for storing, handling and shipping single cards.

The standard size is 3" x 4". BCW lists its 3" x 4" Topload Card Holder at 3" x 4-1/16" outside and 2-3/4" x 3-7/8" inside, and says it fits cards up to 35pt thick. It comes 25 holders to a pack. Thicker patch and relic cards need a thicker toploader.

Also on Amazon: BCW Standard 3x4 Toploaders.

3. One-Touch Holders

Why you need them: a one-touch is a two-piece rigid holder that closes with a magnet. It is the step up from a toploader for the cards you want to show off.

Ultra PRO, which makes the ONE-TOUCH brand, says its holders use a slide-in hinge and magnetic closure, UV-blocking additives and non-PVC materials. The standard model holds 2-1/2" x 3-1/2" cards up to 35pt thick, and thicker cards need a larger point size.

On Amazon: Ultra PRO ONE-TOUCH magnetic holder.

4. Card Savers (Semi-Rigid Holders)

Why you need them: a semi-rigid holder is what you use to send a card in for grading. One example is the Card Saver 1, made by Cardboard Gold, which says PSA recommends it for sending cards in.

PSA's shipping guide says to place each card in a clear penny sleeve, slide the sleeved card into a semi-rigid holder, and not to use toploaders. For standard cards, PSA says the semi-rigid holder must be 3-5/16" x 4-7/8".

A graded card comes back sealed in a slab. More on the process in How Do I Grade My Sports Cards?

5. Storage Boxes

Why you need them: base cards and complete sets pile up fast. A storage box keeps them in order and easy to find.

On Amazon: BCW Monster Storage Box. BCW says it holds 3,200 standard cards and is made for loose and sleeved cards, with slightly less capacity when the cards are sleeved. It also says the box is not designed to fit toploaders, magnetic holders or slabs, so keep those in a box sized for them.

A card sorting tray makes it faster to sort a big stack by team, player or set before it goes in the box.

6. Binders and Pocket Pages

Why you need them: a binder lets you flip through a set or a player collection without handling every card.

The standard page has nine pockets. BCW's 9-pocket pages hold cards up to 2-1/2" x 3-1/2", are made from acid-free material and fit standard 3-ring binders. Use binders for cards you want to look through, and toploaders or one-touches for your most valuable singles.

What to Buy First

  • Day one: penny sleeves and toploaders. Sleeve every card you want to keep, and put the best ones in toploaders.
  • When the stack grows: a storage box for base cards and a binder for the sets you are building.
  • When you pull something special: a one-touch to display it, or a semi-rigid holder if you plan to send it for grading.

Sports Card Supplies FAQ

What supplies do I need to start collecting sports cards?
Start with penny sleeves and 3" x 4" toploaders. Add a storage box for base cards, a binder with 9-pocket pages for sets, and one-touch or semi-rigid holders once you have cards worth displaying or grading.
Do I need a penny sleeve inside a toploader?
Yes. The soft sleeve keeps the card surface from rubbing against the rigid plastic, and the toploader keeps the card from bending. BCW says its standard card sleeves are designed to fit inside standard 3" x 4" toploaders.
What size toploader fits a standard sports card?
A 3" x 4" toploader. A standard card is 2-1/2" x 3-1/2", and BCW says its standard 3" x 4" toploader fits cards up to 35pt thick. Thicker patch and relic cards need a thicker holder.
Should I use a toploader or a Card Saver to send cards for grading?
Use a semi-rigid holder such as a Card Saver 1. PSA's shipping guide says to put each card in a clear penny sleeve, then a semi-rigid holder, and not to use toploaders.
What is the difference between a toploader and a one-touch?
A toploader is a one-piece rigid sleeve that the card slides into from the top. A one-touch is a two-piece holder that closes with a magnet. Collectors use toploaders for storage and shipping, and one-touches for display.
