How to Host a Successful Live Card Break Event
Richard WeissLast updated: October 6, 2026
Key Takeaways
- Pick your platform first. Each one has its own rules for breaks, and they are not the same.
- Whatnot's Card Breaks Policy (dated June 22, 2026) requires the full display of a break to stay onscreen from the sale of an item to the end of the break.
- Whatnot requires the rules for a break to be in Show Notes or in the item listings, and it does not allow randomizer wheels, physical or digital.
- TikTok Shop limits breaks to eligible sellers with a Shop Performance Score of 2.5 or higher (Collectibles Requirements, checked October 6, 2026).
- Set the table before you go live: a break mat, a backdrop, a stand for the hits, and sleeves and toploaders within reach.
Table of Contents
To host a successful live card break, pick a platform and read its break rules, post your own rules before you sell a spot, keep the product and your hands on camera from the first sale to the last pack, and ship every buyer's cards after the show. The steps below cover the planning, the on-camera setup, a run of show you can copy, and the follow-up.
This guide is written for card breakers first. Most of it also applies if you sell comics, video games or other collectibles live, i.e. clear rules up front, product in frame and a clean branded table. If you have never joined a break, start with what a card break is.
Step 1: Choose Your Platform
Where you go live decides who can buy, what you pay and which rules you follow. Here is what each platform's own pages said when we checked them on October 6, 2026.
| Platform | What it is | Getting access to sell |
|---|---|---|
| Whatnot | Live shopping marketplace with a written Card Breaks Policy | The seller page lists no signup fees and no monthly costs |
| Fanatics Live | Describes itself as a live shopping experience for trading cards | Its site links a seller waitlist form under "become a seller" |
| eBay Live | Live auctions and Buy It Now listings on eBay | eBay's FAQ says it is in beta with select sellers and asks you to fill out a Seller Interest Form |
| TikTok Shop | Shopping inside TikTok, with its own break rules | Breaks are limited to eligible sellers with a Shop Performance Score of 2.5 or higher |
| YouTube | General live streaming | You need a verified channel, no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and you must be at least 16 |
Two details to check before you commit:
- Break formats. TikTok Shop's Collectibles Requirements allow personal breaks, pick your team or type breaks, pull-til-you-win breaks and case breaks. Random team breaks are on its prohibited list, with an exception for manufacturer-sealed surprise sets.
- Fees. For Whatnot, see our breakdown of Whatnot seller fees for card breakers.
What Whatnot Requires for a Card Break
Whatnot publishes a Card Breaks Policy. These points come from the version dated June 22, 2026. Read the full policy before your first show.
- Keep everything onscreen. The full display of a break must stay onscreen from the sale of an item to the end of the break. That includes sealed and unsealed product and your hands while you handle cards. You can use more than one camera.
- Post the rules. The rules for the break must be in Show Notes or in the item listings, including what counts as "base" or "bulk" cards and how those cards are distributed.
- No randomizer wheels. Sellers may not use randomizer wheels, whether physical or digital.
- Everyone gets a card. Each buyer must receive at least one card for each break purchase, even in a team break where the buyer's team does not appear.
- One show. All product from a break must be opened in the same live show.
- Sell spots on Whatnot only. Positions in a Whatnot break cannot be sold off the platform, including as pre-sales.
- No prizes and no memorabilia. Sellers cannot include a prize in a break, and jerseys, helmets, bats and other non-card memorabilia cannot be part of one.
- You cannot enter your own break. The seller, the seller's employees, family members and members of the same household may not enter.
Step 2: Plan the Break
Pick the product
Match the product to your audience and your budget. A high-end hobby box brings in collectors who are after a specific chase card. A lower-priced product keeps spots cheap, which is easier for a first show.
Know who makes what before you buy. Topps, which is owned by Fanatics, holds the exclusive MLB, NBA and NFL trading card licenses. The NBA license moved to Topps in October 2025 and the NFL license on April 1, 2026, so Panini football and basketball cards made after those dates are not league licensed. Check street dates on our 2026 sports card release calendar.
Pick the format and write the rules
Decide the format, the price per spot and exactly which cards ship to each buyer. Write that down in plain words before you list the break. On Whatnot the rules have to be in Show Notes or in the item listings, and it is a good habit on any platform.
Set the date and time
Pick a slot when your buyers are free and stick to it, so regulars know when to show up. Avoid going live against a major game or a big release stream in the same sport.
Step 3: Set Up Your Station
Viewers judge a break by what they see on the table. Build the on-camera area first, then test it.
- Break mat. Our Custom Sports Card Break Mats are 4 mm thick neoprene with an anti-slip backing and a hemmed edge. You choose a color, add your logo and pick from three sizes: 12 x 18, 12 x 22 or 16 x 32 inches.
- Backdrop. Our Custom Backdrop is 100% polyester microfiber with an edge-to-edge print and hems on all sides. It comes in four sizes, from 26 x 36 inches up to 88 x 104 inches.
- Card stand. A stand keeps the best pull of the break in the shot. Our Custom Card Stand is a hardboard stand with a plastic leg, a one-sided print and a glossy finish.
- Protection. Keep card sleeves and toploaders within reach so every hit goes into a penny sleeve the moment you show it.
- Camera, microphone and lighting. Point the camera at the mat, light the table evenly and use a microphone that picks up your voice clearly.
- Internet. Use the most stable connection you have and test it before the show.
Starting from zero? The Starter Breaker Bundle includes a custom 16 x 32 inch card mat, a custom 26 x 36 inch backdrop, 80 custom one-touch stickers and custom circle labels, all printed with your logo. For the full walkthrough, read our guide to setting up your card breaking station.
Step 4: Promote the Break
- Announce it early. Post the product, format, spot price, date and time on your social accounts, and repeat it as the show gets closer.
- Use one look. Put the same logo and colors on your graphics that viewers will see on your mat and backdrop, so they recognize the show when it starts.
- Answer questions. Reply to comments about the format and shipping before the show. Those answers belong in your written rules too.
- Tell your list. If you have an email list, send the details and a link to the show.
On Whatnot, promote the show but do not take money for spots anywhere else. Its policy does not allow positions to be sold off the platform or in advance.
Step 5: Run of Show for a Live Break
Use this order for the show itself. The rule column cites Whatnot's Card Breaks Policy and TikTok Shop's Collectibles Requirements.
| Stage | What to do | Rule or reason |
|---|---|---|
| Before you go live | Test camera, microphone, lighting and connection. Post the break rules. | Whatnot requires the rules in Show Notes or in the item listings |
| Open the show | Welcome viewers. State the product, the format, the spot price and what ships. | Buyers should know what a spot gets them before they pay |
| Sell the spots | Sell every spot through the platform. Keep the product in frame while you sell. | Whatnot does not allow off-platform or advance sales of positions |
| Show the sealed product | Hold each sealed box up to the camera before you open it. | TikTok Shop requires product to be sealed and unmodified before the break |
| Open the product | Keep the product, your hands and the cards on the mat and in frame. Call out each hit, sleeve it and put the best one on a stand. | Whatnot requires the full display onscreen until the end of the break |
| Recap | Read back the hits by spot or team. Tell buyers when their cards ship. | Sets expectations before viewers leave |
| After the show | Sort, pack and ship. Post clips of the best pulls. | Whatnot requires at least one card shipped for each break purchase |
While you are live, greet people as they join, answer chat questions out loud and explain what you are doing as you do it. A buyer who cannot watch the whole show should still be able to follow a replay.
Planning a giveaway on Whatnot? Its Giveaway Rules and Requirements page (dated May 22, 2026) says the seller, not Whatnot, is solely responsible for complying with the laws that apply to the giveaway. Read it before you run one.
Step 6: After the Break
- Ship what you sold. Sort the cards by buyer, protect the hits and pack them so they do not move in transit. Our guide on how to ship sports cards covers the packing.
- Brand the package. A sticker on a one-touch or toploader puts your name in the buyer's hands. Our Custom One Touch Stickers come 80 to an order, printed with your design.
- Post the highlights. Share clips of the best pulls and thank the buyers who joined.
- Ask what to change. Read the chat and your messages after the show and note what buyers liked and what confused them. Fix the rules text first.
