To ship a sports card, put it in a penny sleeve and a toploader, tape the opening shut with painter's tape, slide it into a team bag, sandwich it between two pieces of cardboard and mail it in a bubble mailer with tracking. A plain white envelope with a stamp works for low-value cards, but it ships without tracking.
What You Need
- Penny sleeves. The penny sleeve is the card's first layer and keeps the surface from rubbing on the holder. We carry BCW card sleeves in packs of 100.
- Toploaders. The rigid holder that stops the card from bending. Our BCW 3 x 4 toploaders come in packs of 25 and fit standard cards.
- Painter's tape. It peels off the toploader cleanly. Do not use packing tape or clear tape on a toploader.
- Team bags. A resealable bag that holds the taped toploader and keeps moisture out.
- Cardboard. Two pieces cut slightly larger than the toploader.
- Bubble mailers, plain envelopes or small boxes, depending on the shipment.

How to Pack a Single Card, Step by Step
- Check the order. Pull every card the buyer paid for and match it to the listing before you pack.
- Sleeve it. Slide the card into a penny sleeve.
- Put it in a toploader. Thick relic and patch cards need a thicker toploader. A premium card can ship in a one-touch instead.
- Tape the opening. Put one strip of painter's tape across the top of the toploader so the card cannot slide out. Fold one end of the tape over to make a pull tab.
- Bag it. Place the toploader in a team bag and seal it.
- Sandwich it. Put the bagged card between two pieces of cardboard and tape the cardboard together. Do not tape the card or the holder to the cardboard.
- Mail it. Place the sandwich in a bubble mailer, seal it and add the shipping label. The card should not be able to move inside.

To send a tracked bubble mailer through USPS, use Ground Advantage. As of October 6, 2026, USPS says Ground Advantage packages are delivered in 2 to 5 days, tracking is included in the price and $100 of insurance is included. Prices start at $8.40 at a Post Office, and USPS says you get lower commercial rates when you buy the label online. UPS and FedEx also carry small packages, so compare rates and delivery times.
Plain White Envelope vs Bubble Mailer
A plain white envelope, or PWE, is the cheapest way to mail a card. As of October 6, 2026, a First-Class Mail Forever stamp costs $0.82 and covers 1 oz. There are three limits to know, all from USPS:
- No tracking. USPS says tracking is not available for First-Class Mail letters.
- Thickness. USPS says trading cards in an envelope should be okay as long as the envelope stays flat, is not lumpy and is less than 1/4 inch thick.
- Rigid envelopes cost more. An envelope that is rigid or lumpy is nonmachinable and costs $0.49 more to send. USPS also says not to put rigid objects, such as hard plastic card cases, loose in unpadded paper envelopes.
Use a bubble mailer with tracking when the card is worth more than you are willing to refund or when the buyer paid for tracked shipping. On eBay, eBay standard envelope is the middle option for cards at $20 or less. Our guide on how to sell sports cards covers eBay's fees and tools.
Shipping Graded Cards and Lots
A graded card in a slab is rigid, so it does not go in a plain envelope. Put the slab in a fitted sleeve or team bag to prevent scratches, wrap it in bubble wrap and ship it in a small box or a padded mailer with tracking. For a lot, stack the cards in sleeves and toploaders or a card storage box, and fill the empty space so nothing shifts.
For higher-value cards, buy insurance that covers the sale price and add signature confirmation. On eBay, signature confirmation is required for Authenticity Guarantee items sold for $750 or more when you ship them to the authenticator.
Shipping Cards to PSA for Grading
A grading submission is packed differently from a sale. PSA's packing instructions, checked October 6, 2026, say to:
- Place each card in a clear penny sleeve.
- Slide each sleeved card into a semi-rigid holder, such as a Card Saver 1. PSA says not to use toploaders, tape, pull tabs or sticky notes.
- Place the stack between two cardboard dividers and secure it with 2 to 3 rubber bands, tight enough to prevent shifting and loose enough to avoid damage.
- Wrap the stack in packing material, place it in a new shipping box and fill any empty space.
- Seal all seams with packing tape. PSA says to avoid painter's tape, scotch tape and reused tape on the box.
