First Edition (Pokémon)
First Edition (adjective): the first print run of a Pokémon card set from the Wizards of the Coast era (1999–2003), marked with a black "Edition 1" stamp on the left side of the card, below the artwork. First Edition cards are the scarcest and most valuable versions of those sets.
First Edition in More Detail
Early Pokémon sets were printed in waves: First Edition first, then Unlimited (no stamp) once the set sold through. The stamp is the identifier — no stamp on a WotC-era card means Unlimited (or Shadowless, in Base Set's case). A First Edition Base Set Charizard is one of the most famous cards in the hobby.
Modern Pokémon sets don't use First Edition stamps, which is why the term always points to vintage. Condition rules value here — grading matters enormously on vintage Pokémon.

How do I know if my Pokemon card is First Edition?
Look for the black "Edition 1" stamp on the middle-left of the card, below the art frame. No stamp means Unlimited or Shadowless.
Are all First Edition cards valuable?
They carry premiums across the board, but value concentrates in holos of popular Pokémon and in high grades — a common First Edition card in played condition is still modest.
