How to Buy Sports Cards Wholesale: A Comprehensive Guide
Richard WeissLast updated: October 6, 2026
Key Takeaways
- "Wholesale" means two different things in the hobby: sealed boxes and cases bought from a distributor for resale, or bulk lots of single cards bought from another seller.
- Hobby distributors sell to retailers, not collectors. GTS Distribution states on its site that it does not sell to the general public.
- Southern Hobby Distribution requires a reseller permit, tax ID or federal EIN, and as of October 6, 2026 it only accepts applications from brick-and-mortar retail stores.
- Anyone can buy bulk lots from card shops, card shows and eBay. On eBay, lots are not eligible for Authenticity Guarantee.
- Topps, owned by Fanatics, holds the exclusive MLB, NBA and NFL trading card licenses, so new licensed sealed product in those sports is Topps product.

To buy sports cards wholesale, you either open an account with a hobby distributor, which requires a registered retail business, or you buy bulk lots of cards from dealers, card shops, card shows and online marketplaces, which anyone can do. Collectors without a business are buying in bulk, not at true wholesale.
What Does Wholesale Mean for Sports Cards?
The word is used for two different things:
- Wholesale sealed product. Sealed boxes and cases sold by a distributor to a retailer, who resells them to collectors. This is true wholesale, and it is only open to businesses.
- Bulk lots. Large quantities of single cards sold together at a lower price per card than buying them one at a time. Anyone can buy these.
Know which one you are after before you start looking, because the sources and the requirements are completely different.
How Hobby Distribution Works
Card manufacturers make the product, distributors buy it and resell it to stores, and stores sell it to collectors. Hobby boxes are sold through card shops and hobby dealers, and the retail formats go to big-box stores. Our guide to hobby box vs retail explains the formats.
Two examples of hobby distributors, from their own sites:
- GTS Distribution describes itself as a leading wholesale distributor of gaming, toys, sports and entertainment collectibles since 1976. Its site says, "We do not sell to the general public," and points collectors to their local hobby shop.
- Southern Hobby Distribution was founded in 1991 and distributes sports cards, gaming products, supplies and pop culture merchandise to stores.
On the manufacturer side, Topps, which is owned by Fanatics, holds the exclusive MLB, NBA and NFL trading card licenses. Topps became the NFL's exclusive licensee on April 1, 2026 and returned as the NBA's in October 2025. Panini football and basketball cards made after those dates are not league licensed. See the 2026 sports card release calendar for what is coming out and when.
Where to Buy Wholesale and in Bulk
| Source | Who can buy | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Hobby distributor | Registered retailers | Sealed boxes and cases for resale. You need business documents to open an account. |
| Local card shop | Anyone | Some shops sell bulk boxes of singles or will quote a price on a full case. Call and ask. |
| Card shows | Anyone | Dealers sell lots and you can inspect them in hand and negotiate. See the biggest sports card shows. |
| eBay | Anyone | Search for lots and check sold prices first. Lots are not eligible for Authenticity Guarantee, which only covers single cards. |
| Facebook groups and forums | Anyone | You deal directly with the seller. PayPal Purchase Protection does not cover friends and family payments. |
What a Wholesale Account Requires
Each distributor sets its own rules. Southern Hobby Distribution's new account page, checked October 6, 2026, shows what to expect:
- All accounts must have a reseller permit, tax ID or federal EIN.
- Approved applicants must submit proof of a business license and a sales tax certificate.
- It is only accepting applications from brick-and-mortar retail hobby stores with a permanent, physical location. Mall kiosks, market stalls and online-only businesses are not being considered at this time.
If you do not have a registered retail business, your local card shop is your link to distributor product.
Tips for Buying Bulk Lots
- Know your goal. Building sets, stocking a show table and looking for cards to grade each call for a different kind of lot.
- Check sold prices. Look up the best cards in the lot before you make an offer. Our guide on how to find the value of your sports cards shows how.
- Ask what is in it. Get the card count, the years, the sets and clear photos. Be careful with lots described as "unsearched."
- Check the condition. Bulk lots often include cards with soft corners or surface wear. Ask whether returns are accepted.
- Negotiate. Bulk prices are often negotiable, especially on larger quantities.
- Add up the full cost. Include shipping, which adds up fast on heavy boxes of cards.
Risks and Benefits of Buying in Bulk
Risks
- Counterfeits and altered cards. Buy from sellers with a track record, and remember that lots on eBay do not go through authentication.
- Low-grade cards. The price per card is low for a reason. Assume some cards will have flaws.
- Overproduced cards. Bulk lots often include common cards from the junk wax era, when cards were heavily overproduced.
Benefits
- Lower cost per card than buying the same cards one at a time.
- Faster set building and a quick way to stock inventory for resale.
No lot guarantees value. If you want specific cards, buying them as singles is the direct route. We sell single sports cards, and our guide on how to buy sports cards covers where to find them.
Storing a Bulk Purchase
Plan the storage before the cards arrive. Card storage boxes hold the bulk, and anything worth protecting goes in a penny sleeve and a toploader. We carry BCW card sleeves and BCW 3 x 4 toploaders. See how to organize sports cards.
If you run a card shop or a breaking business, we also make custom supplies, i.e. custom card mats, backdrops, banners and one-touch stickers.
