Famous Case Hit Inserts

These three Panini insert lines are the classic examples collectors and breakers chase:

All three are Panini brands. Panini held the NBA license for 16 seasons through 2024-25 and the exclusive NFL license from 2016 until March 31, 2026. Panini football and basketball cards made after those dates are not league licensed, so the Kaboom!, Downtown and Color Blast cards with NBA and NFL team logos come from the earlier, licensed products.

Topps Case Hits and Chase Cards

Topps, which is owned by Fanatics, holds the exclusive MLB, NBA and NFL trading card licenses. It returned as the NBA licensee in October 2025 and became the NFL's exclusive licensee on April 1, 2026. Licensed case hits in those sports now come from Topps products. 2025 Topps Chrome Football was released on April 15, 2026 as the first product under the Topps NFL license. A hobby box has 20 packs and a hobby case has 12 boxes, so a hobby case holds 240 packs. Topps' published hobby odds for the set are:

Chrome Radiating Rookies: 1 in 580 packs
Game Genies: 1 in 928 packs
Ultraviolet: 1 in 1,160 packs
Kaiju: 1 in 2,319 packs
Helix: 1 in 2,559 packs

At those odds, Shadow Etch and Chrome Radiating Rookies together average about one card per hobby case. Kaiju and Helix each average about one card per 10 hobby cases, so they are rarer than a true case hit. Topps notes that actual contents and odds may vary.

In basketball, Topps added the Gold NBA Logoman Patch for 2025-26. The patches were worn during the 2025-26 season on the jerseys of the 2024-25 MVP, Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, then inserted into cards.

Why Case Hits Matter in Breaks

Case hits are a big part of why card breaks exist. A break splits a case across many collectors, so every spot has a shot at the case hit without anyone paying for the whole case. Collectors call a case "dead" once its case hit has been pulled while boxes from that case are still unopened.

Follow these steps:

Find the insert name on the product's checklist.
Look up the manufacturer's published odds for your box format. For 2025 Topps Chrome Football, Topps links the checklist and the odds sheet on the product page.
Work out the packs in a case, i.e. packs per box times boxes per case.
Compare the two. If the odds are close to one card per case, the hobby treats it as a case hit.
