Can the PS5 play PS4 discs?

Yes, on a PS5 with a disc drive. Sony says the overwhelming majority of PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles, and you keep the disc inserted to play. Sony's support page says PS4 game discs cannot be used with the PS5 Digital Edition.

What is the difference between the disc and Digital Edition PS5 consoles?

The PS5 console has a disc drive and plays PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs. The PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive and plays games downloaded from PlayStation Store. Sony sells a separate disc drive for slim Digital Edition consoles.

Will PS5 games still be released on disc?

Not new releases after 2027, according to Sony. Its PS5 page says that from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be sold on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only. Discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console.

Are PS5 games region-locked?

No. PS5 games are not region locked, so a game bought in one region can be played on consoles from every region. We stock US and PAL versions, so check the product title to see which one you are buying.

On Metacritic's PS5 list, Elden Ring and Baldur's Gate 3 share the highest Metascore at 96 as of October 6, 2026. Astro Bot, God of War Ragnarök and Hades II are among the games at 94.

Physical PS5 Games and the 2028 Disc Cutoff

Sony announced on July 1, 2026 that it will stop making PlayStation game discs in 2028. Its PS5 page carries this notice as of October 6, 2026: from January 2028, newly released games on PlayStation will be available on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital format only, and discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console.

Some games already skip the disc at launch. Alan Wake 2 was digital-only when it came out on October 27, 2023. Physical editions followed in October 2024, including a collector's edition produced with Limited Run Games.

To play discs you need a console with a disc drive. The PS5 console plays PS5 and PS4 games on Blu-ray discs. The PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive, and Sony sells a separate disc drive for slim Digital Edition consoles. A disc can also be lent, traded in or resold when you finish the game.
