Table of Contents
There are 1,025 Pokémon as of October 6, 2026. That is the number of species in the National Pokédex, from #0001 Bulbasaur to #1025 Pecharunt, through Generation IX (Pokémon Scarlet, Pokémon Violet and Pokémon Legends: Z-A).
Total Number of Pokémon
The official Pokédex published by The Pokémon Company in Japan lists National Pokédex numbers 1 through 1025, with no entry after 1025. The last Pokémon added was Pecharunt, which arrived in the Mochi Mayhem epilogue for Pokémon Scarlet and Pokémon Violet on January 11, 2024.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A, released on October 16, 2025, is part of Generation IX but did not add any new species, so the total stayed at 1,025.
You will still see 898 quoted in older articles. That was the total before Pokémon Legends: Arceus and Generation IX added 127 more.
How Many Pokémon Are in Each Generation?
Pokémon are grouped into generations, each tied to a new set of main series video games. Here is how the 1,025 break down:
| Generation | First games (year) | New Pokémon | Pokédex numbers |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | Red and Green (1996) | 151 | 1 to 151 |
| II | Gold and Silver (1999) | 100 | 152 to 251 |
| III | Ruby and Sapphire (2002) | 135 | 252 to 386 |
| IV | Diamond and Pearl (2006) | 107 | 387 to 493 |
| V | Black and White (2010) | 156 | 494 to 649 |
| VI | X and Y (2013) | 72 | 650 to 721 |
| VII | Sun and Moon (2016) | 88 | 722 to 809 |
| VIII | Sword and Shield (2019) | 96 | 810 to 905 |
| IX | Scarlet and Violet (2022) | 120 | 906 to 1025 |
Each generation's count includes Pokémon added by later games and expansions in that generation. Generation IX, for example, launched with Scarlet and Violet on November 18, 2022 and reached 120 after its expansions.
Do Mega Evolutions and Regional Forms Count?
No. The 1,025 figure counts species, and each species has one National Pokédex number no matter how many forms it has.
- Evolution: many Pokémon evolve into a different species, and each stage has its own Pokédex number. Bulbasaur, Ivysaur and Venusaur are numbers 1, 2 and 3.
- Mega Evolution: a temporary transformation introduced in Pokémon X and Y. A Mega-Evolved Pokémon keeps the same Pokédex number.
- Regional forms: a version of an existing Pokémon found in a specific region, often with a different type. They were introduced in Generation VII. Alolan Rattata is Dark/Normal, while the original Rattata is Normal, and both are #0019.
If you list every form separately, the number is higher. The official Japanese Pokédex shows 1,302 entries for the same 1,025 Pokémon as of October 6, 2026.

When Will the Number Change?
The next increase comes with Generation X. The Pokémon Company announced Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves on February 27, 2026, scheduled for release in 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2. Three new first partner Pokémon were revealed with the announcement: Browt (Grass), Pombon (Fire) and Gecqua (Water). They are not in the official Pokédex count yet. No full list of new Pokémon has been announced as of October 6, 2026.
